Chalkhills

The road to Swindon reminded me more of Iowas countryside
more than any other bit of England we saw. The landscape
is flatter and obviously home to more farming and industry.
No one Ive ever spoken to has ever had anything
good to say about Swindon, but those in the know are aware
that the marvelous pop band XTC is from there. Jeff and
I rolled to a halt at the base of the hillside home of
the Uffington White Horse, which is carved out of the
chalky soil and which makes an appearance on the cover
of XTCs album English Settlement. We climbed
the hill and I sat atop the Horse and wrote postcards
home, the wind blowing in my face and the sun lighting
up the white chalk.
