Illustration No.21
“The Red Lion

Jeff and I travelled on to Avebury and spent two nights at The Red Lion, a medieval inn situated within the heart of the Avebury megalithic site. I had imagined The Red Lion to be the Druid version of the classic American biker bar, but it turned out to be a sport biker bar, which subtracted from the mystique but I suppose it’s all right.

The Red Lion was where I (momentarily) gave up one of the trip’s great pleasures—the full English breakfast. For those of you who haven't experienced an English breakfast, you’ll have to be satisfied imagining a plateful of eggs, bacon, mushrooms, tomatoes, baked beans, toast, and toast’s less health-conscious cousin fried bread. After wolfing down this gutbusting meal three days running, I opted for a bowl of cereal and some fruit my first morning at the Red Lion. That night I had a terrific steak and ale pie, and I was back with the program the next morning with another full breakfast.
